When I photograph large families, I always start with whole group shots. This allows me to get an idea of the family dynamic and the personalities of each member.
From there, I divide the group into smaller families, couples, and individual portraits. I always make sure to do a mix of posed and candid shots, aiming for a 50/50 split.
I take the time to coordinate with the family to ensure that we capture all the group shots that they have in mind. Many times, families like to recreate shots from years before, and I always encourage them to share their ideas with me. I also offer my own suggestions to add variety to the shoot.
During the session, I make sure to take 5-10 shots of each couple and grandparents with grandkids to ensure that everyone has enough images to choose from. I always respect the wishes of the client and take the time to listen to their needs and preferences.
